Tom Cruise Vs. Shrek
Tom Cruise may be the voice of the villain in “Shrek Goes Fourth”. According to Cinemablend Cruise is being considered for a major supporting role in the film. Maybe after Cruise’s hilarious cameo appearance as an overweight, hairy, foulmouthed movie mogul in “Tropic Thunder” he’s up for another comedic role this time opposite Mike Meyers. The next instalment of the Shrek franchise is currently scheduled for a release in 2010.
Denzel Washington to Appear in Book
Denzel Washington has landed a role in an upcoming drama called “Book of Eli” where he will play a hero in an apocalyptic future where America is a wasteland and he fights to bring society the knowledge that could be the key to its redemption. Twins Allen and Albert Hughes (“From Hell”, “Dead Presidents” and “Menace II Society”) will be directing the film while Joel Silver produces with Washington, Susan Downey, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Johnson and Kosove say "This is an epic tale, a thriller set in a future uninviting yet hopeful, and its hero could not be better suited to Denzel Washington. The Hughes brothers will bring a bold, contemporary edge to the story and we're excited to have this be our next film." “Book of Eli” filming starts in January.
Forest Whitaker and Renee Zellweger in 'Love'
Variety announced that Forest Whitaker and Renee Zellweger will be starring in an independent film called “My Own Love Song”. The director of “La Vie en Rose”, Olivier Dahan will be helming the project alongside producer Alain Goldman. The story is based around a couple, one who is a former singer who is wheelchair bound, and the other her friend who go on a roadtrip to Memphis. They have both faced many challenges in their lives and now lean on each other for support. Filming starts next month in Kansas and New Orleans.
Huge Debut for 90210
“90210” had the biggest hype of any show on The CW this season and its audience for the debut on Tuesday night certainly proved that. “90210” is now the highest-rated premiere in network history with 4.9 million viewers between age 18-49. Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty have made a return 8 years later for the revamped series. The premiere was two hours complete with sex in the parking lot, drug deals, drinking and a showdown between the school’s gossip queen and the bad girl. The critics didn’t have much to say about the new “90210” with Variety calling it "a pallid copy of the original fish out of water story only with shinier cars, fancier clothes and Botox aplenty." The Boston Globe deemed it "pretty bad," and a critic for Newsday commented it’s "a perfectly competent and reasonably seamless revival that understands what made the original tick."
Two-Face Officially Dead
Aaron Eckhart who played the character of Two-Face/Harvey Dent in the latest Batman film “The Dark Knight” has told ComingSoon.net that Harvey Dent is officially dead. He says "He is dead as a door nail. He ain't coming back baby!" How can Eckhart be sure, well he went and asked director Christopher Nolan whether Two-Face would be back for the next film and Nolan said "You're dead" before Eckhart could even get the question out of his mouth. “Hey Chris, am I?' 'You're dead!' 'Alright, cool.” Eckhart’s most recent role is in an independent film called “Nothing is Private” or “Towelhead” which has debuted at film festivals in North America and will be in theatres soon.
Ashley Judd with Dwayne Johnson in Tooth Fairy
Ashley Judd has signed on for the role of Dwayne Johnson’s girlfriend in a comedy from 20th Century Fox called “Tooth Fairy”. Johnson has the role of a hockey player in the minors with the nickname the Tooth Fairy with Judd a single mother of two by his side. Michael Lembeck is directing the film with the script written by Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia. Filming is set to begin in Vancouver in October will a release date in June of next year.
Another Member of Inglorious Bastards
The Hollywood Reporter announced that the latest actor to join to the cast of Inglorious Bastards after last weeks’ additions of Diane Kruger, Daniel Bruhl, Paul Rust and Chrisoph Waltz, is German actor Til Schweiger. Schweiger is known for his roles in “King Arthur” and “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life”. In this World War II film Schweiger will be playing the role of one of the members of the Nazi killer team which is headed by Lt. Aldo Raine, played by Brad Pitt. Filming is set to begin in Germany in October and the film has a release date of June of next year.
Tim Roth an Angel
Variety reports that Tim Roth will be playing the lead character in an upcoming film called “Skellig” which will air first on TV and then in theatres. “Skellig” based on a novel written by David Almond is about a boy in northern England who finds a strange creature (Roth) in the shed of his parents’ house. He decides to help the creature who seems to be hurt, by feeding him Chinese food and beer. He then realizes that this part owl, part angel has magical powers. Filming has already begun in Cardiff, England and the film will be released in the spring of next year.
Poltergeist May Have Found Its Director
The remake of the 1982 film “Poltergeist” may have found its director. Vadim Perelman, best known for directing “House of Sand and Fog” and “The Life Before Her Eyes”, is in talks to direct. Julie Snowden and Stiles White joined the team last week to write the script for this horror film. The original movie was directed by Tobe Hooper with Steven Spielberg co-writing the script about a haunted house full of children’s nightmares.
The Dark Knight Still Breaking Records
Over the weekend “The Dark Knight” managed to break another record by earning $500 million since its release 6 weeks ago. This made “The Dark Knight” only the second movie to ever break $500 million. “Titanic” is the only other film to hit $500 million and it went on to earn over $600 million. “The Dark Knight” is not expected to ever reach “Titanic’s” total but Dan Fellman of Warner Bros. predicts it to come in around $530 million but if it keeps doing really well then it may make it to $550 million. Fellman says "I keep raising the number because it just keeps holding better than expected.”
Guy Ritchie Denies Rumours
The rumours that Russell Crowe will be playing Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick Dr. Watson in “Sherlock Holmes” have been denied by director Guy Ritchie. At the premiere of his latest film called “RocknRolla” in London, Ritchie stated “I don't have a Watson. Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson." Ritchie also told reporters that “Sherlock Holmes” will not be focused on the one story but will stem from the four novels and 56 short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Robert Downey Jr. will play Sherlock Holmes is this film slated to start filming next month.
Tropic Thunder Makes it Three in a Row
“Tropic Thunder” held onto top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row. With “Disaster Movie”, “Babylon AD”, and “Traitor” all opening this long weekend, “Tropic Thunder” still managed to hold its own coming in at $14.3 million over the four days. “Babylon AD” was expected to take the top spot but slipped to second spot with $12 million. “The Dark Knight” came in with $11 million sticking it in third spot followed closely by “The House Bunny” at $10.2 million and Don Cheadle’s “Traitor” at $10 million. With only “Bangkok Dangerous” opening everywhere on Friday we’ll see if “Tropic Thunder” can make it four weeks in a row at number one.
Facebook: The Movie
Facebook is going to have a movie written about it. Writer/producer Aaron Sorkin appropriately announced on his Facebook page that he will be writing a movie about the extremely popular networking site. "I've just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.)" Sorkin is responsible for writing many big name films including “A Few Good Men”, “The American President”, and “Charlie Wilson’s War”. Sorkin also writes on his page “I honestly don't know how this works, which is why I'm here. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them as best I can. If anyone has any comments I'm glad to listen. And if anyone has any Facebook stories I think they might be helpful. That's all. I'll try to get better at this as I get more practice.”
Australia Has Been Bumped
Since Warner Bros. decided to move “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” from November of this year to July of next year, other studios are following suit. The latest is 20th Century Fox who has decided to move the release of “Australia” back from November 14th to November 26th. Director Baz Luhrmann will now have a bit more time to complete the final edits on the film starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The story follows an English woman (Kidman) who arrives in Australia and falls for a rugged cowboy (Jackman). The film will now be up against several others that release on the same day including “Transporter 3”, “Four Christmases”, and “The Time Traveller’s Wife”.
Company Men Acquires Ron Livingston
Variety reports that Ron Livingston of “Office Space” will be starring in an indie comedy called “The Company Men”. Livingston will play the lead role of an aging businessman who struggles with a collapsing economy as he tries to save a company. The film is being financed independently with Mathew Robert Kelly producing and Raul Sanchez Inglis directing. Livingston’s most recent project was with acting opposite Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams in “The Time Traveller’s Wife”. “The Company Men” will begin filming in October in Detroit.
